About Jay's Real Experience
The Bar Grader.
Jay brings a unique advantage to your bar exam prep, having served as a bar grader for The State Bar of California during multiple consecutive cycles of the California Bar Examination. Throughout each grading cycle, he underwent extensive training sessions tailored by The State Bar to ensure consistency in grading styles, standards, and techniques among graders. By the end of his tenure, Jay had graded thousands of bar exam answers, gaining invaluable insights into the standards. This experience enhances his ability to provide expert guidance to aspiring attorneys navigating the California Bar Exam.
The Law Professor.
Soon after having graded for The State Bar, Jay realized that his passion lay with teaching. He simultaneously started his successful solo tutoring practice and joined the faculty of Santa Clara University School of Law and then Golden Gate University School of Law. It was then that Jay first earned the respect of his peers in the law faculty at those schools, as well as those across the state and country.
At Santa Clara Law, Jay served as a Clinical Professor of Lawyering Skills and as the Assistant Director for Academic Development within the Academic and Professional Development Program. He taught two upper-level legal writing courses specifically designed to enhance students’ timed analytical writing skills, focusing on organized writing formats used by Bar Examiners for essays and performance tests. One of these courses targeted lower-performing students in a small section environment, helping them master essay exam writing for both law school and the California Bar Examination. Additionally, he developed a comprehensive bar preparation curriculum, trained adjunct professors, conducted skills workshops, and provided individualized counseling to students at various academic levels.
In his subsequent role in bar exam services at a well-known law school, Jay continued to teach and mentor students, collaborating with faculty to enhance educational approaches. He taught a large section of the primary bar preparation course, emphasizing essential lawyering skills for successful legal practice. This course equipped students with concrete strategies for success on all three parts of the bar exam, along with valuable feedback. Jay also led a highly sought-after course designed specifically for motivated third-year law students, further demonstrating his commitment to their success..
